Fert price up again - another nail in the coffin

19 February 2008

I see that Ballance has put up their fertiliser prices again. I almost wonder if there is a conspiracy to kill of every last sheep and beef supplier in this country.

Another rise in fertiliser price certainly won't help and for us farmers who have higher transport costs, another rise, on top of a drought and having had to giveaway our lambs as stores this could just about be the last straw.

I see that the ceo of Ballance says farmers will need to apply fert after the drought to ensure grass comes away (so forward thinking of him).

And, I read in Farmer's Weekly today that the price of lamb is going to rise later in the season. Might be okay for some downland non-droughted farmers but even when the drought is over, and the grass does eventually grow you've got to actually have the stock to fatten to sell for these improved prices!
