In March 2009, Gorge Road School pupils had the chance to explore what lives in
the streams of the Waituna Catchment. The main purpose was to see where
koura were living, as they are a good indication of stream health. Of the
four sites that were checked out by the school, two of them had koura. Both
these sites were ones that had little modification. At the Moffat Stream on
Moffat Rd, kokopu were caught in the minnow traps and at the Waituna Stream
site at Pirie's on the Kapuka North Rd, there was a banded kokopu and an
inanga (the main whitebait species) caught.
