Gravel pit becomes wetland

Recently WLG committee members erected three grey teal nest boxes.
The Gravel Pit restoration continued through the year and the area is now looking more like a natural wetland.

With a good level of water in Polly's Pond, we are seeing the return of wildlife to the area.

A fish survey, using fyke nets, showed there are shortfinned eels present. Frogs can also be heard and seen around the pond. White faced heron are often seen prowling around the area and mallard ducks are regularly in residence.

Grey teal are a native duck seen around Waituna Wetlands and nest boxes have been erected to encourage them to breed at the Gravel Pit.

Future plans are to construct a boardwalk and gravelled track to a lookout on top of the hill, so watch this space.
