More than 40 people representing a variety of interest groups attended the meeting held at the Tisbury Hall. Discussions covered a diverse range of topics from concerns about the health of the wetland to suggestions as to where to direct the funds.
Issues raised included the amount of silt entering the lagoon from farm land to concern about the impact of dairying and the amount of buy-in from land owners regarding the use of best practice technology.
Opening up the Waituna Wetland so more people can appreciate the place and allow for increased recreational opportunities was also presented as an option as was incentives for farmers to use to right equipment to lessen the impact of their operations.
The department, with consideration being given to developing a management group or forum to help steer the use of the money, is now looking to form a position on the future management of the wetland.
Public submissions on the application of the funding are also being called for to generate a burst of activity and directive. A few submissions have been received as a result of last week's meeting. It is hoped more would come in over the next couple of months.
